To last longer, the five things that actually work are: train your pelvic floor, use the start-stop technique, slow your breathing, get fitter and cut back on alcohol, and lower the pressure. Number one does the heavy lifting, it strengthens the muscle that controls when you finish, and it is clinically proven.

1. Train your pelvic floor
This is the big one. Your pelvic floor is the muscle that acts as the brake on the finishing reflex, and it responds to training. In a 12-week trial, men went from about 32 seconds on average to over 146 seconds, with 82% regaining control (Pastore et al.). Weak muscle, no brake. Trained muscle, real control.

Do 10 slow squeezes (hold 5 seconds, relax 5) plus 10 quick ones, most days, about five minutes. A trainer gives you resistance you can feel so you know you are working the right muscle. Full routine in the complete guide.

2. Use the start-stop technique
When you feel close, pause. Stop moving, let the urge drop, then continue. Do this a few times before you finish. It trains your body to recognise the point of no return and back off from it, and it works even better once your pelvic floor is stronger.
3. Slow your breathing
Fast, shallow breathing spikes arousal and tips you over the edge sooner. Slow it down. Long, steady breaths through the nose keep your body calmer and give you more say over the timing. It sounds too simple to matter, and it makes a real difference.
4. Get fitter and cut back on alcohol
Cardio improves blood flow, which supports both control and firmer erections. Alcohol does the opposite, it dulls sensation and control, so the 'few drinks to relax' plan usually backfires. Move more, drink less before sex, and sleep enough.

5. Lower the pressure
Anxiety is one of the most common causes of finishing fast, and it feeds itself: you worry, you rush, it happens, you worry more. Taking the pressure off, focusing on sensation rather than performance, breaks that loop. If anxiety is also softening your erections, see why you lose your erection during sex.
